The Truth Shall Set You Free

Early on, she learned

her size made her unlovable

so she tried to shrink.

And when her body didn’t cooperate

her heart did.

Early on, she learned

not to love her body

(she hurt less that way).

Early on, she learned

her dreams were too crazy

so she tried to dream less.

And when her imagination didn’t cooperate

her heart did.

Early on, she learned

not to dream

(she was less disappointed that way)

Early on, she learned

that she could calm the chaos

if she did things perfectly.

And when her body became exhausted

her heart kept beating.

Early on, she learned

her needs came after all others’

(she felt in control that way)

Early on, she learned

that she could feel safe

if she built walls or chose to have none.

And even when she felt abused and broken

her heart beat on.

Early on, she learned

how not to have healthy boundaries

(she didn’t trust herself, you see)

Early on, she learned

for her to be acceptable, she must accept

that she didn’t have choices.

And even feeling powerless,

her heart kept beating.

Early on, she learned

to look outside of herself for answers

(she really couldn’t see the truth).

Early on, she learned

a great deal of lies

and she believed them all.

And even though her teachers were misguided

her heart kept beating.

Because, you see, her heart trusted

that she would finally learn the truth.

(and then she did, and she was free).

Thank you for reading this little glimpse into my soul ❤
